Welcome to our website. Today we're going to look at why the cover of a roller shutter box may deflect and what to do when it does. Let's start with the most common causes.
Why does the roller shutter box deflect?
The roller shutter box contains a shaft on which the roller shutter fabric, which consists of lamellas, is wound. The box itself is attached to the covers of the appropriate size on the sides. And the covers, in turn, are attached to the guides in which the canvas runs.
The most common causes of box lid deflection:
Installation of the roller shutter system not at a right angle. When the surface on which the roller shutter is mounted is not level. For example, a window opening has a disturbed geometry. One wall or window sill protrudes forward by several centimeters and the roller shutter is planned to be mounted on the opening. Attaching the guides to such a surface can result in a slight skew, i.e. one side will protrude forward and thus the geometry of the box will not be ideal. The same applies to the height of the roller shutter system. When one side is higher than the other. This is possible when the client is guided, for example, by the floor level, and the floor is curved. These distortions may not be visible to the naked eye, but they affect the entire structure. That's why security shutters for windows or garages should be installed using a building level. Or even better, entrust the installation of the security roller shutter to Magnita professionals with many years of experience.
Installing the box on an uneven surface. This can be the case when the surface above the window has irregularities, depressions. Also, when one side is protruding forward by a few centimeters. This is a common situation in many Soviet-era buildings, where such little things were not given due attention. It is also possible after construction work to renovate the facade, when the plaster was applied by eye. In this case, the box will be skewed and its lid may sag. In this case, the installation tips are similar to the previous point, namely: minimize surface differences and use the building level when installing the roller shutter.
The box is not screwed under tension. This is possible when there are gaps between the side covers and the front cover of the box. When installing the cover of the roller shutter box, you need to give it maximum tension and try to install it as tightly as possible.
Mechanical damage (bending) of the side cover during transportation or assembly of the roller shutter. Damage to the box lid itself. During transportation, something heavy may have been placed on top, so that the roller shutter box lid is bent.
Damage to the stoppers when opening. If the customer applies excessive force when opening the roller shutter and pushes it up too much, the stops will hit the lid and it may be damaged.
As a result of economy. Bending of the cover of the safety roller shutter box is possible with a large width and a small material thickness. This is done to save money because the box is expensive.
How do we prevent box deflection?
When people buy protective shutters for a large garage from us, this problem usually does not exist if they are installed correctly. But sometimes, as a safety net, we reinforce the lower edge of the box cover by adding an additional stiffener. When choosing a roller shutter door, you can get additional information from the manager on this issue, namely: whether your product will need to be reinforced and you will be able to choose the best option.
There are two main methods of reinforcing the frame to prevent deflection:
Creating an additional stiffener at the production site. In this case, our specialists take the box lid and use a sheet metal bender to form an additional "step" that serves as an additional stiffener. Some of our dealers immediately ask us to form a reinforced box for them if they realize that they will be buying large roller shutter doors. This is usually a small "step" that is made 10 or 20 mm wide.
The second option is to add a metal corner. We use an aluminum corner, which is usually attached to the bottom of the roller shutter and physically restricts access to the lower part of the structure. In the case of reinforcing the security roller shutter frame, the corner is attached to the inside of the frame. This corner is inserted into the lock of the box lid along the entire length and is evenly riveted along the entire length. This does not affect the appearance of the finished roller shutter, but adds strength to the entire box and allows you to fix the problem if it has already occurred. You can also do it yourself with a minimum of tools.
Both options are demonstrated in the video we have prepared for you. You can watch it on the website or by following the link to YouTube.
Is it worth reinforcing the roller shutter box?
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this problem should not arise if the roller shutter is installed correctly. That is why we recommend that our customers order the installation service from us or our dealers. We have representatives all over the country.
If you decide to install the roller shutter yourself to save money, we advise you to set the entire structure using a building level.
You can also order the box reinforcement service in advance. It won't cost a lot of money, but this way you are guaranteed to get a smooth and beautiful roller shutter system that will last for many years.
