Have you ever wondered why two roller shutter profiles that look identical in size and colour can carry different price tags?
The answer lies in the polymer used to coat the metal in the polymerisation chamber, from which the roller shutter profiles are then produced. Let's take a closer look at the two popular polymer coatings offered by Magnita.
The first coating, PU/PA, is expensive, and this is exactly the case where you can say: "if it costs more, it's better made." So what is it made of? PU/PA is a coating composed of polyurethane, modified acrylic and polyamide. The polyamide provides excellent resistance to ultraviolet radiation, while the acrylic delivers high strength. It has a silky-matte surface. The coating thickness is around 25 microns. The material's durability comes from its high resistance to corrosion, UV and damage, together with outstanding strength, which is exactly why we produce our roller shutter curtains from material with this coating. In addition, polyurethane is highly resistant to most chemicals typical of an industrial atmosphere. Practice has shown that the durability of polyurethane-coated materials holds up even in the demanding conditions of a maritime climate. Just as important is that the material can be profiled and bent without damage, with no microcracks forming at the bend. This coating is more durable than polyester. Its service life is on the order of 30-50 years, with a warranty period of 15 years.
The second coating is a mass-market product. PE is a coating based on a polyether known as polyester. Products with this versatile coating can withstand high air temperatures and offer a high degree of corrosion resistance. This material is fairly durable. In recent years, polyester has gained considerable popularity. This has made it possible to achieve properties such as high resistance to weathering, an attractive appearance and pliability. In addition, thanks to its good flexibility, the material is easy to form and suits any climatic conditions. However, this coating's resistance to mechanical damage is lower than that of the PU/PA coating. Its service life is 20-30 years, with a warranty period of 10 years.
There is one more type of coating we can offer: powder coating of metal applied with an electrostatic spray gun followed by polymerisation in an oven. There are two types of coating: for outdoor use (polyester) and for indoor use (epoxy-polyester). This type of coating creates a reliable protective layer over the plastic memory that is resistant to ultraviolet, damage, mechanical impact and temperature swings. Such a surface stands up to aggressive environments. This type of coating comes in a wide palette of colours and surface textures, from gloss to patterned. One of its main advantages is the ability to coat finished products of any configuration. We use this type of coating to paint roller shutter boxes, guide rails and bottom slats, blind cornices up to 6 metres long, as well as window sills and blind mounting brackets.
The service life of this coating is 20 years.
