Connecting and Setting Up Remote-Controlled Roller Shutters

Welcome to our website!

In this article we will look at the different types of roller shutters with automation, how they are controlled, and show you how to set up operation using a remote control. Let's start by explaining how automated roller shutters work.

How Do Automated Roller Shutter Systems Work?

Roller shutters are typically used to improve the security of a space, and they offer additional heat- and sound-insulating properties. The shutter curtain is made up of slats that roll up and hide inside the box when open, and cover the opening when extended. Automated roller shutter systems are built around a motor. These are special tubular motors that are fitted inside an octagonal shaft. They are also known as in-shaft motors.

What Control Options Are Available for Automated Roller Shutter Systems?

Automated roller shutter systems offer several control options, which can also be combined. These include:

  • A wall-mounted switch.
  • A remote control.
  • A key switch.
  • Various relays, such as a timer, a light sensor, and so on.

In this article we will show you how to pair a remote control with a roller shutter and go over the main settings.

Pairing a Remote Control with an R-Series Motor Shutter

Once the roller shutter is installed and connected to the mains, the first thing to do is pair the remote control with it. This allows the system to work specifically with your remote.

Steps to Pair a Remote Control with an Automated Roller Shutter:

  1. Press and hold the "up" button on the remote.
  2. Wait a few seconds until the indicator light signals.
  3. Supply power to the motor.
  4. The motor should respond and make an up-and-down movement.
  5. Press "up" once more.
  6. The motor should make a short, distinctive up-and-down movement, which means pairing is complete.

You can watch a short video on our channel.

That's it — the roller shutter is ready to use.

How to Reverse the Direction of an R-Series Motor with the Remote

Now let's look at the case where you need to reverse the motor's direction of travel. This can happen when the contacts were wired incorrectly during installation — that is, when you press "up" the shutter curtain goes down, and vice versa.

Steps to Reverse the Motor's Direction of Travel:

  1. Switch the roller shutter on (supply power).
  2. Press and hold the stop button on the remote.
  3. Wait a few seconds.
  4. The shutter motor should respond and turn a quarter turn in both directions.
  5. Next, press the "down" button on the remote.
  6. The motor will again make a demonstrative back-and-forth turn, which means the direction of travel has been reversed.

How to Add an Extra Remote to an R-Series Automated Roller Shutter?

If you want to buy automated roller shutters and control them with several remotes, then after setting up the first remote you need to add the additional ones to the motor. Here's how to do it.

Steps to Add an Extra Remote to an R-Series Motor Shutter:

  1. On the main remote, press and hold the stop button for 5 seconds.
  2. Wait for the motor's distinctive sound (a click).
  3. Press "up" on the additional remote.
  4. Test that both remotes work.

To make it clearer, we've prepared a video with tips for you.

How to Delete a Paired Remote from an R-Series Shutter?

It may happen that a customer wants to replace a remote for any reason. We recommend deleting the old remote before adding a new one to the roller shutter.

Steps to Delete a Remote from an R-Series Shutter:

  1. Press and hold the "up" button on the remote.
  2. Wait a few seconds until the indicator light signals.
  3. Supply power to the motor.
  4. The motor should respond and make an up-and-down movement.
  5. Stop the motor.
  6. Press and hold the stop button on the remote.
  7. Wait for the distinctive up-and-down movement on the motor.
  8. Press and hold the button on the back of the remote.

The remote will then be unlinked from control, and the shutter motor will stop responding to it. A recording of this process is shown in the video.
