When considering the purchase of protective shutters or roller gates and blinds, one of the most important decisions faced by all customers is the choice of profile. The options typically offered are foam-filled and extruded profiles. They differ in terms of cost and characteristics, and not every client can immediately discern the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Let's explore what these profiles are and which one is better.

Structural Differences

The most common profiles on our market are foam-filled profiles. They are made from aluminum or steel strips with a thickness of 0.3-0.5 mm. They are also known as roller shutter profiles because they are passed through a system of rollers to achieve the necessary configuration. The final stage of production involves filling the blank with polyurethane foam. This filling gives the profiles their characteristics: high strength, reliability, good insulation properties, all while being lightweight.

Extruded profiles are manufactured differently. Aluminum metal, heated to a liquid state, passes through an extruder. After cooling, an extruded profile is obtained. Its walls are 1-1.5 mm thick, and it has internal ribs for added rigidity. These profiles outperform others in terms of strength and durability. However, they have a few downsides, including their heavier weight and poorer insulation properties.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Foam-Filled Profiles

First, let's consider the advantages of choosing foam-filled profiles:

  1. Lightweight: This allows for cost-effective control systems and reduces mechanical stress on components, resulting in longer-lasting structures.
  2. Excellent insulation: Thanks to the polyurethane foam, these profiles provide good thermal insulation, potentially lowering heating costs. They also offer sound insulation, providing a quieter environment when the shutters are closed.
  3. Affordable: Their simpler manufacturing process and the use of inexpensive lifting mechanisms make them more budget-friendly.

However, foam-filled profiles do have their drawbacks:

  1. Softness: Due to their thin walls, these profiles can be dented easily, even from minor impacts. Any collision or intentional damage may require lamella replacement or repairs.
  2. Wear and tear: After prolonged use, the contact points between the guide rail and the profile may wear down due to the foam filling, causing operational issues.
  3. Noise: Since these profiles are lightweight, strong winds can cause vibration and noise. In severe storms, the slats may even detach from the guide rails.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Extruded Profiles

Extruded profiles have several advantages:

  1. Durability: Their thicker walls make them resistant to dents and damage, resulting in a longer service life. They can span wider openings for a given height.
  2. Weather resistance: Extruded profiles perform well in adverse weather conditions, making them suitable for outdoor use.

However, extruded profiles also come with disadvantages:

  1. Weight: Their weight necessitates more expensive control systems, and manual operation is typically limited to smaller shutters.
  2. Higher cost: The complex manufacturing process and the use of more materials make them pricier.
  3. Insulation: While extruded profiles offer better insulation than other materials, they may not match the thermal and acoustic properties of foam-filled profiles.

In summary, both foam-filled and extruded profiles have their pros and cons. If you have a limited budget for shutter installation, foam-filled profiles may be your preferred choice. Extruded profiles tend to be 1.5-2 times more expensive but excel in terms of protective properties. The choice ultimately depends on your specific needs and budget.
