Instructions for fitting a lock into the bottom bar of roller shutter systems

Welcome to our website!

Today we'll look at how to carry out a standard installation of a deadbolt lock into the bottom bar.

This process doesn't take much time, and we've also made a video so you can see everything for yourself.

How to prepare for fitting the deadbolt lock

1. Take the bottom bar and lay it with its back facing you. Using a tape measure, find its centre. Our bottom bar is 88.5 cm long. So its centre is 24.25 cm; mark that point.

2. Next, take our template. You can make yourself a similar one to fit your lock. The central hole is for the lock, and the two others are for the router bit. We'll cut the slots between them.

3. Mark up the bar and cut two horizontal slots between the outer marks. Then, using a 2.5 cm diameter hole saw, we'll cut out the centre for the lock cylinder.

4. Place the hole saw at the central point and cut the hole.

At this point the preparation of the bottom bar is complete.

How to prepare the bolt plates

1. Now we need to work out the size of the bolt plates. To do this, subtract 15.5 cm from the bottom bar and divide by 2. We get 36.5 cm.

2. Measure the bolt plates with a ruler, mark 36.5 cm and cut them off.

3. Then, using our template, mark the holes for the axles and make them.

4. After this, take some tape and use it to fix the lock mountings to the bolt. This is done so that they don't turn during installation.

At this point the bolt plates are ready.

Fitting the lock into the bottom bar of the roller shutter

1. Take the lock. Before fitting, bend it slightly.

2. Take the bolt plates and insert them into the bottom bar, holes facing the lock, so that they slot into our cut.

3. Fit our lock and engage the axle into the bolt plates on both sides. You need to check visually that the bolt and lock have seated in their holes.

4. Now screw it in. While doing so, hold the bolt with your finger so that it doesn't move. If the plate we fixed with tape has shifted slightly, adjust it.

Check how the lock works. If you've done everything correctly, your key will pull out in both the open and closed positions.
